Making strides (or rides)
When you live in a Holler, you have a quad (AKA a four-wheeler). It's just the way of it. Granted, it took us several years of Holler living before we owned a quad, but the point is, we have one now.
Our neighbors like to ride their quads up and down the lane and up and down the hills around the holler. And the boys like to watch them out the windows. So much so that when I saw a small battery-operated quad at a yard sale in May 2012 for just a few bucks, I figured Kieran would love it and snatched it up for him.
Once Seth got it running, we excitedly watched as Kieran tried it out. And . . . as soon as he heard the noise it made, he hated it. Hated. It. Crying, hands-over-his-ears, running away--the whole bit. It was a great moment for me as a mother.
However, the "the boys will love a little quad" idea was redeemed by Cael, who, at the time when I bought it, was just a year old. That didn't stop him from wanting to ride it.
He loved it. And over the past year-and-a-half that we've had the little quad, Cael has figured out how to ride it on his own.
And, gradually, he's been showing more and more interest in it--pushing Cael while he's on it, sitting on it while it wasn't moving, etc. And he's experienced a few other battery-operated vehicles at friends' houses and watched how other kids interact with them.
And then, last week, Kieran rode the little quad. It was his idea and once he was on it, he loved it.
I knew he would.
I just didn't know how long it would take for him to know that, too.

Apple picking
There's an apple orchard not far from where we live. And every fall, the preschool Kieran attends takes a field trip there.
Last year, there were no apples because a late frost in April had killed the buds on all the trees. But this year, the harvest was plentiful.
We got to take a walk into the apple grove to pick some apples. Kieran had his off the tree and was headed back to the store before I even got my camera out.
Cael was a bit more judicious in his choice of apples.
So I helped him.
Then we took the apples back to the store and put them through the washer and somehow figured out which apple belonged to which kid when they all came out the other end of the washer all clean and shiny.
Cael started munching on his right away but Kieran doesn't eat any type of whole fruit (except really, really cooked carrots--it's a texture issue with him; he will, however, eat certain pureed fruits such as applesauce) so I held on to his until it was time for each kid to take a turn with the apple-peeler-corer-slicer.
He enjoyed it. A lot. He kept returning to it even after everyone was finished with peeling/coring/slicing their apples.
And then there was the hayride. Last year, for some unknown reason, Kieran got freaked out when we climbed in the wagon for the hayride. He'd been on hayrides before and enjoyed them but that time, something clicked in his brain, and he cried throughout the entire ride. It was fun. After it was over, I told him he survived and he repeated that to anyone who asked how it went, "I survived."
This year, though, he hopped right on the wagon, went to the back with his teacher, Mrs. Mary, sat on her lap the entire time, held his ears, and did just fine.
Just another fun day in the country.

E is for Elephant
Kieran studied the letter E in school a few weeks ago (I'm way behind, I know--life and something about wrapping up a VBS project . . . ).
He had some fun smiles for the pictures, so I'm posting more of them for your viewing pleasure.
"Ok, great smile, now hold up the elephant while you smile, so I can see it."
"Ok, there's the elephant, now how about a smile?"
"So, you're done then? Got it."

Caelisms
Since this is my online diary, I wanted a place to record some of the fun things Cael says.

September 5, 2014
I asked Cael to say the pledge he got to lead at preschool today: "Special agents of the one true God . . . " is apparently what "I pledge allegiance" sounds like to him.
August 20, 2104
Cael to Kieran: Hey, Kieran, whoever wins does; whoever doesn't win, doesn't. Does that sound like a plan?

Me: I'd like some peach cobbler, please.
Cael: We don't have that.
Me: Oh, ok. How about some blueberry pie?
Cael: We don't have that either.
Me: OK. Well, what do you have?
Cael: We have hamburgers and cake.
Me: Sounds good. I'll have some of that. Can I have a spoon, too?
Cael: You don't need one.
July 8, 2014
Seth: Cael, what do you know about tornadoes?
Cael: They go around and around.
Seth: And what are they made of?
Cael: Spaghetti!
Seth: No, not spaghetti. Wind . . .
Cael: And spaghetti!
5/21/2014
Kieran: Super Cael, help!
Cael: What?
Kieran: Help!
Cael: You're not in trouble.
Kieran: Yes, help!
Cael: No, you're not in trouble, Kieran.
5/9/2014
Cael: What's that cow saying? Is it saying "Good morning"?
Me: Maybe it's saying, "Good mooooooooooorning"!
Silence from Cael
Cael: No, I think it's saying, "Good morning."
3/25/2014
Cael: Can I have that caboose?
Me: No, it's GrandBob's. You need to wait for him to play with it. He's in charge.
Cael: No, Jesus is in charge, Mommy.

Seth was discussing what a firefighter does with the boys tonight: "Firefighters put the fire out."
Cael: Where?
Seth: They put out the fire.
Cael: WHERE?
Seth: Well, firefighters go to wherever the fire is and put it out.
Cael: WHERE DOES THE FIRE GO WHEN THEY PUT IT OUT?
Oh, gotcha, Buddy -- we take the trash out to the trash can, so I guess the fire goes out to the fire can . . . ?
3/11/2014
Cael: "I love you, Mommy." *kisses me* "There's a boogie in my nose."
3/6/2014
So, the boys have the idea that each item comes from its own store -- wagons come from the wagon store; tractors come from the tractor store, weedwackers come from the weedwacker store, etc. And they'll often ask, "Can we go to the ___ store to get ___?" Today, Cael asked, "Can we go to the pot store?"
2/6/2014
Cael, while running through the house: "I'm the winner!"
Followed by Cael: "No, I'M the winner!"
1/27/2014
Cael: Can we go to the park today?
No, buddy, it's too cold and snowy. We have to wait until Spring to go to the park.
Cael: WHERE. IS. THAT. SPRING? COME HERE NOW, SPRING!
1/21/2014
Cael has been referring to himself as Super Cael lately. Kieran, while being tickled by Seth said, "Help me, Super Cael!" Cael looks surprised, jumps up, promptly trips over a toy, and mutters to himself, "Super Cael can't do ANYthing!" And then got up and ran, tripping over another toy. He let out another sigh, "Awwwww!"
1/20/2014
So, today I took the boys to the Batesville rehab center to get K started on OT. We went to the bathroom before it started. During the session, Cael had to go again, so I took him to another bathroom -- it was right next door to the first bathroom, only the interior was mirrored to the first. We walked into it and immediately Cael said, "Someone turned this bathroom around!"
10/23/2013
Me to Cael: You are my favorite Cael.
Cael: Yes, I am.
Nice to know he doesn't have any self-image issues . . . yet.
10/4/2013
Cael, singing along to Matt Redman's "Bless the Lord" song in the car: "oh my sore, oh my sore, oh my sore back"
10/4/2013
Cael has been on a "me first" kick lately -- I want it first, I saw it first, I'll do it first. Today, I was driving the boys home from Kieran's ST appointment and went past someone mowing the lawn. "Look, boys, a lawnmower." They both didn't look in time, so I said, "Oh, you missed it." Cael said, "I missed it first!"
September 13, 2013
Me: Cael, why are you hitting me on the head?
Cael: There was a rhinoceros on your head.
August 2013
We were traveling to Seth's family get-together and Cael asked if we were going on an adventure. Seth said, "Yep, we're on an adventure!" Cael said, "No, we're not on an adventure, we're on the road!"
Cael: We don't have that.
Me: Oh, ok. How about some blueberry pie?
Cael: We don't have that either.
